Deadman Canyon is unique since it’s close to town, but situated in a well-shaded canyon on the north slope of the Burro Mountains. That makes it suitable for warm weather hiking.
We usually hike to the junction with the CDT, but if you hang a right and go about another quarter mile, there’s an open area with great views to the east that makes a fine spot for lunch.
You might work up a thirst on that climb! If it’s a Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon in season, head over the hill to Ravenswing Farm for hand-crafted beer in their wonderfully quirky outdoor beer garden!

Directions: From downtown Silver City, head south on NM 90 for about 12 miles. Just past the Tyrone Mine, turn right on Tyrone Road. The road turns to gravel, and can be rough in spots, but is suitable for standard passenger vehicles. Follow Tyrone Road for 13.2 miles, staying to the right at both forks. There’s a parking lot and a trailhead on your left.
