McComas Peak delivers a very high return for a small investment! Just seven miles from downtown Silver City, it’s close enough for an after-work or early morning hike. With a trailhead elevation of 6938′, it can be hiked in almost any season, including the hottest days of the year. The trail is short but delivers a good workout since it climbs 676 in 1.2 miles. Best of all, there’s a mind-blowing 360-degree view from the summit!

Directions: From downtown Silver City, travel west on route 180 to Alabama Street. In 3.22 miles, stay left on Bear Mountain Road. At the national forest boundary, the road turns to gravel. It is suitable for most standard vehicles, but can be quite slippery is wet weather! In 3.16 miles, turn left into a small parking lot (room for 3-4 vehicles) just before a cattle guard. The trail heads up the hill to the south.
